Educating Katie Storyboards

First Ideas-

This was the first set initial ideas of shots that would be in our opening.
We didn't use a storyboard to start with as we didn't have a set idea on the order of shots so we put down some ideas on paper and then figured out the order. Then, when planning in more depth we would add different ideas for different shots.

MAIN STORYBOARD

Here is the storyboard for our opening. This gives the shots we plan to do and the order we want them to appear in. We have tried to make this detailed, so it will make our filming much quicker and easier. We made a storyboard of what shots we wanted because when it came to filming, we was more organise and knew what shots we had to film next and how long they was meant to last.

After knowing that our first ideas of shots wasn't long enough we came up with more ideas for shots that could make our opening longer. We filmed all these shots them uploaded them to Premiere and then edited with the shots that flowed best with our opening.

Research into Foley Sounds

Foley effects are sound effects added to the film during post production. They include sounds such as footsteps, clothes rustling, doors opening and slamming, punches hitting, glass breaking ect.
This clip helped explain the importance of Foley sounds and why the industry use them and what they use to try and recreate the sounds.

Shot/Titles Comparison to Napoleon Dynamite

Music

For our opening we wanted two pieces of music that completely contrasted. Firstly, we wanted a romantic piece of music to set the genre and make the audience think they are watching a romantic film then we wanted to put our own twist and change the music. For this we added a disk scratch and imported a cover of Teenage Dirtbag . We thought it was a good choice as it highlights the genre shift and makes the audience question the genre. Instead of Teenage Dirtbag we originally had All Star by Smash Mouth and soon realised that we couldn't use it as it was copyrighted. This was disappointing for us as we thought the music really made the opening and clearly represented our characters was feeling.

These is the music we used:

Film Openings - Titles Research

Down With Love

Young and Wild

Moonshine Kingdom

Napoleon Dynamite

Meteo+
For our film opening we research many different film opening and found a mixture of things.
Our findings:
- Colour schemes to fit with genre
- Speech/Dialogue used- Upbeat music
- Colouring to show time that set (Moonrise Kingdom) This was done by using a filter
- Key links to the character and story

After looking further into film openings, we found Napoleon Dynamite and thought that it was an interesting take on a film opening. They incorporated everyday objects/symbols into the opening which created a lot of enigma. The enigma created made the audience want to know more and want to find out who Napoleon Dynamite is.We took inspiration from this film opening by also using everyday objects including titles which linked/highlighted our main character. For example, we took inspiration from the plate on chicken nuggets but linked it to our character by using a slice of cake.

Shooting Schedule

The first shooting date was when we first filmed our film opening. Unfortunately after editing all our shots taking a fortnight to do it was deleted off the computer by mistake, therefore we had to plan to re shoot all our shots after the Christmas holidays. The third and fourth shot dates were added as we wasn't happy with some of our shots as they looked unprofessional and we didn't want to lose marks because of this, so we redone some of our older shots and added new ones which we thought suited the genre better.

Film Pitch - One Last Heist

Storyboard for Breakfast at Tiffanys Opening Sequence

This lesson we had to create a storyboard for a film opening of our choice. We chose Breakfast at Tiffany's, we had to then draw what was happening in that scene and write what type of camera work/shots we being used, what it showed and the effect on the audience. From this task we learnt how much you can gather from the opening of a film and how much work goes into making it. Also we learnt from this clip the use a range of camera shots in our own opening as it appears more effective.

WordCloud -Educating Katie

Word cloud made with WordItOut

We created a word cloud for 'Educating Katie' as we felt that it would be a good way of exploring all of the emotions that our character felt. Doing this helped us to make sure that we included these emotions within our film opening to show the audience what she is feeling and to create enigma, as why she is feeling this way.

Behind the Scenes: Educating Katie

These are some of the photographs from the filming stage of 'Educating Katie'. This show the making of some of the shots, such as the card, the love letter and the cake. This was a very fun thing to do when making our film opening as we felt that it was more creative than just having general every day shots. Secondly, using not speech was interesting as it helped us to create enigma through these items that we created to link with our character. The enigma was "who is this girl?" and "who loves her?" and lastly, "what is her story?".

Character Planning

Character 1: Katie :-
This is the main character of the whole film. She is used to show that she doesn't agree with love, she may have had a bad experience with it in the past.
- She will be in the opening scene bumping through a couple.
- We have chosen this character as she is a simple everyday person that you wouldn’t expect something like this to happen to. Doing this means that it makes her relatable to the audience

Character 2:-
This is the second character that is not a key character within the film. She is used to show the main characters attitudes towards love.
- She will open the film with her ‘boyfriend’ as they walk hand in hand.
- We have chosen her as she is the perfect tall blonde girl. Doing this helps to highlight the fact that the main character is jealous and hates love because she feels she is not perfect like girls like this character.

Character 3:-
- This character is not a key character, but is simply used to show the main characters attitudes towards love.
- He will open the film by walking hand in hand with his girlfriend. We have chosen a realistic couple to show everyday life, rather than showing the “perfect” couple.
- We decided that we wanted him to look like an inviting person, doing this will show the difference clearly between the couple and the main character.

Reflection: In our final film opening we only used character one as we felt that the ideas we previously had in which we used all three actors did not really represent the idea that we wanted to get across and it didn't particularly create any sort of enigma which we felt was crucial to our film opening’s success.

Character One was always planned to be our main character however when we used all three our main character wasn't as obvious and neither was her hatred of love as she looked like an extra used in the background. After some thinking we changed our entire aspects we watched a lot of film openings and really like the Napoleon Dynamite idea of using the main character to create enigma by not showing her face just objects she comes across

Research Into Costume, Lighting and Make Up

 :
Costume:

For costume we want our main girl character to be wearing something like this as it would be something someone would wear in everyday life and we didn't want them to look overly smart as it wouldn't look realistic.

Make Up for the Main Character:

We chose natural makeup as we wanted our  main character to come across as your ordinary girl, she has to look simple but elegant at the same time. The natural look helps keep our character realistic and relatable.

Other Female Character:

we wanted our other female character shown in the romantic couple to be less natural as we wanted to show the contrast between the two characters , we wanted this character to look more focused on her appearance and more complex then the main character.

Lighting & Setting

We wanted natural lighting as its supposed to be a relatable film based on day to life so its needs to be realistic for the audience. We wanted our opening to look as real as possible so we set it in a normal location you would associate with everyday life.

Risk Assesment

Activity Assessed: AS media filming
Activity Location: Various locations
Who is at risk: Actors/crew members

HAZARD:
RISK LEVEL BEFORE:
(HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW)
RISK LEVEL AFTER:
(HIGH, LOW)
CONTROL MEASURES:
(REDUCING THE RISK TO A MINIMAL RISK)
Filming on the field.
If wet or slippery, the crew/actors could fall over
MEDIUM – Members of the production could get injured if they slip over
LOW – It wasn’t wet or slippery on the day of filming
To reduce the risk we was careful when on the wet ground and made sure we did not run
Using Candles – Fire risk
HIGH – When using the fire, things that are flammable could easily catch fire
LOW – Make sure the candles are not lit when unattended
To lower the risk when burning the candles, we made sure to have a bucket of water on set and also not to leave them unattended at any time
Trip hazards – Wires in the hoover scene
HIGH – The wires could be left out and a member could fall over them and injure themselves
LOW – Make sure that wires are tucked away and easily visible for the crew to see
To do this we tidied all the wires and had yellow tape over them to make them more noticeable to see
Knife
HIGH – The knife is sharp so somebody could cut themselves if misused and or could slip when handling it
MEDIUM – Make sure the knife is correctly handled and that is only used when needed
To lower the risk, we reminded all actors that the knife prop is not fake and that if misused can cause damage or injuries

Produced By
Executive Designer
Starring
Music
Directed By
Editing
Photography
Writers
Casting
Produced By
Cinematographer
Styling

After watching our film over and checking our work we realised that we had two 'Produced By' titles and went back and changed the sequence as our research showed that directors and producers came at the end of the title sequence. As we wanted our opening to look professional with the titles we changed them and these are the ones we finally agreed on:

Designer
Starring
Music
Editing
Photography
Styling
Casting
Cinematographer
Writers
Producers
Directors

We took inspiration from the Napoleon Dynamite and we compared our one to it, this is what is similar and different:

Romantic Film Openings

For our film opening we chose to do romance , we chose two film openings, one was obviously shown as a romance and the other one was not as obvious we decided to show both sides of the romance genre as we will be portraying both sides in our opening.

The Notebook

The opening shot is a sunrise image over a lake in which a title appears with what we assume is the main or one of the main characters, the titles are small and in white basic font at the bottom of the screen this works well as it does not distract the viewers from the shot. The shots then continue throughout the opening with the sun rising and calm music which sets the mood and hints the genre.
We are shown a shot of someone who we presume is a man in a boat rowing along this lake the slow movements of the rowing compliment the music and setting to intensify the genre, this also creates enigma as we want to know who this person is? and why is he rowing at such an early time in the morning? Good use of props , symbolise and setting are used in the opening as for one we can tell the boat will be used throughout but also there are birds flying calming around towards a white house which contrasts with the darkness of the early morning and we can tell this three things are going to be brought up later in the film to help make the plot.

The pink/red colour of sunrise shows elements of sunrise , there is no diegetic sound used at all in the opening which compliments the fact that its early and no one should be awake however we have already seen a man and now the shot changes to the side of a woman's face looking at the lake and the sunrise arguing the question why are both these people awake ? Which gives us the impression they're going to meet later in the film or they already have therefore portraying the idea of love.

Dear John

In the start we see a man in a army uniform who we presume has just been shot and a voice over of him saying the words 'do you wanna know the first thing on my mind when i got shot? - coins' he carries on talking about coins, the shot transition to a little boy looking at coins falling continues to show how coins are made and talking about his childhood, this creates enigma as we don't quite understand how coins are relevant, the music is understated its calming and quiet and is drowned out by the voice over complimenting the idea that the character is blacking out and he would slowly be only able to hear the voice in his head.

The shot transitions back to the army and we start slowing moving into to a close up of the mans face he then says 'do you wanna know the last thing i thought about after i got shot ? - you.' after he says this the screen goes black as if he's passed out , this shows its a love story as clearly he is talking about someone he loves , although it is not evidently obvious at the start as it appears as an action film but the end creates this romantic enigma of who is 'you' ?

Moodboard

After some reflection on our film opening idea, we decided as a group to only pick one genre as we had a wide range of genres at first. We thought it was a bit ambitious and thought it was unrealistic as our idea couldn't be made with the resources we had.

Our first idea was an action/thriller/romance, we thought of our idea and when creating the mood board, realised it was a bit unrealistic and we couldn't make it to the standard we would have liked. So we decided we would choose one genre and we picked Romance, as all of the group liked that genre best.

This was our first mood board for the action/thriller/romance idea:

In this moodboard we added pictures for action/thriller/romance films like Mr and Mrs Smith, Day and Knight and Place Beyond The Pines. We put signifers in like guns and roses. We also added images for things you would normally expect to see in a action movie, like explosions and fight sences. For hair and make-up we looked at more theatrical make-up. Lighting was normally quite dark in the action films.

After our decision we created a new mood board for a romance film opening:

In the moodboard we included images from romantic films like, The Notebook and Hitch. We also added things that we wanted our titles to be like, for example we want to incorperate rose petals in the titles and write something on a cake. We also put in some pictures on hair and make-up, we want hair and make-up to be natural, this will make our opening realistic and will be easy to work with as actors can just wear thier normal natural make-up and it will go with what we want it to look like. In the moodboard we included some genre signifers like rose petals, candles, chocolates, hearts and flowers.  For romance films lighting is normally clear and bright so you can see all the colours on screen.
